How names work in Kosovo
2 naming traditions are in use in Kosovo, listed in the order of the country's languages. They are separate systems, not variants of one, and each has its own page.

Where the two lists disagree
25 of ASK Kosovo — Kërko Emrin (Name Search)'s top 25 given names sit five or more places away in our record corpus. Neither ranking is wrong; they count different people.
The register counts one population in one year — everyone it enumerates, once. Our corpus counts records: historical registers going back decades, the diaspora, business and place records, and several generations of births. A name that was common two generations ago outranks a name common today; a name whose spelling scatters across sources (diacritics dropped, transliterated differently) loses ground, because only its dominant spelling is ranked.
Characteristic of Kosovo
Not the most common names — the most distinctive ones. A name appears here when Kosovo holds a larger share of its bearers than the world does, weighted by how much of the country's whole name distribution it accounts for.
Over time
Up to five names at a time.
Scripts & spelling
The Latin alphabet here is not the ASCII one. Stripping diacritics merges names that are not the same name and changes how they are pronounced, and a record that has been ASCII-folded has lost information no amount of guessing recovers.
Countries whose names look alike
Measured as the overlap between each country's top 300 given-name forms, weighted by how common each is — the fuzzy-set approach of Lauc (2024), on a truncated inventory.

What we know about this register
ASK Kosovo 'Kërko Emrin' per-name oracle at ask.rks-gov.net/NameSearch, sourced from civil registration. HARVESTED 2026-07-30 — 13,710 distinct given names, up from 88. Endpoint (found in /js/nameSearch.js): GET /NameSearch/GetNamesCount/?Name=<n>, case-insensitive, returning national total plus male/female split, a 35-row municipality breakdown, and a per-BIRTH-YEAR series (citizensNamePerAge, 1940-). A name absent from the register answers total:0 with an empty municipality array, making this a true existence oracle. 27,110 candidates probed for 13,710 hits (50.6%), 0 failures, ~3h at 4 workers; scripts/fetch_xk_ask_namesearch.py then parse_xk_ask_namesearch.py -> 336,604 rows (15,404 national + 321,200 birth-year). The previous 88 names came from the sibling GetTop5NamesYear endpoint (top-5 x ~69 years), never from this per-name oracle, which is why this was mis-catalogued as list_coverage top_n. Seed was built by scripts/build_probe_seed.py from the mondodb backbone restricted to tokens ATTESTED in AL/XK — the raw lang='sq' pool is 66% noise (13,339 'sq' rows sit under cc=IN) and global-frequency ordering floats Indian names above Albanian ones. Both diacritic and ASCII-folded spellings are probed because they are DISTINCT register entries, not duplicates: gëzim returns 4,233 and Gezim 373. GIVEN NAMES ONLY — every surname returns 0 (Krasniqi, the commonest Kosovar surname, returns 0), so Kosovo SURNAMES REMAIN UNCOVERED — the only local route was a person roster, dropped 2026-07-31 because global-dictionary keeps official name parts from citable government publications and a leaked roster cannot be cited; roster-derived parts belong in mondodb. Municipality labels are not harvested: ASK renders them from an i18n key I-MUNICIPALITY-<id> with no translation endpoint exposed (4 candidate paths 404), so only opaque integer ids exist; the full breakdown is kept verbatim in official/raw/XK/ask_namesearch.jsonl.gz for later labelling without re-querying.

About this data
Official figures are reproduced from the register named beside them, at the year named beside them, and are never combined across registers. The "across all records" ranking counts records in our own corpus — historical registers, the diaspora, business and place records — and is not a population count. Bearer estimates are omitted where a name accounts for more than a quarter of a country's records, because the estimate is not defensible there. Names listed by reference works and licensed name dictionaries are cited as attesting a name; their figures are not published.
