Where the two lists disagree
22 of INEC — civil registry names's top 25 given names sit five or more places away in our record corpus. Neither ranking is wrong; they count different people.
The register counts one population in one year — everyone it enumerates, once. Our corpus counts records: historical registers going back decades, the diaspora, business and place records, and several generations of births. A name that was common two generations ago outranks a name common today; a name whose spelling scatters across sources (diacritics dropped, transliterated differently) loses ground, because only its dominant spelling is ranked.
Characteristic of Ecuador
Not the most common names — the most distinctive ones. A name appears here when Ecuador holds a larger share of its bearers than the world does, weighted by how much of the country's whole name distribution it accounts for.
Over time
Up to five names at a time.

Countries whose names look alike
Measured as the overlap between each country's top 300 given-name forms, weighted by how common each is — the fuzzy-set approach of Lauc (2024), on a truncated inventory.

What we know about this register
The earlier sea-philipperemy entry above (an id/content mismatch already present in this file -- left as-is, not touched by this addition) and ec-inec-names both concluded this PowerBI-hosted civil-registry visualizer has "no direct CSV download" / is only a 2,784-row manual top-N stub. That conclusion was correct for the tool's OWN search box, which is currently broken on the live site (its third-party "Smart Filter Pro" custom visual has an expired license and silently drops all typed input -- confirmed via Playwright, including forced JS value injection). But the report's OTHER still-working visuals (year chart, canton/province tables) reveal the underlying Power BI querydata endpoint, which IS directly and arbitrarily queryable by swapping in any name as the DAX filter literal -- no cookies, no auth token, just the public resourceKey header. Verified live 2026-07-14: MARIA=1,042,139; ZAMBRANO (surname)=268,282, matching INEC's own July 2026 press release for Ecuador's most common surname exactly. tipo=given uses Dim_Nombres/"Primer Nombre", tipo=surname uses Dim_Apellidos/"Primer Apellido" -- one query returns only one tipo. Matching is case-insensitive but not whitespace-tolerant; a literal single quote in a name needs DAX-string escaping (doubled). No suppression observed on the headline national total (only sub-national/canton breakdowns are threshold-suppressed, which this ingest does not use). ~85 req/s achievable at 25 workers with 0 errors (courtesy/undocumented endpoint -- not a published API, so kept moderate rather than pushed further). No enumeration endpoint exists and EC's own prior name lists are far too small to seed from, so seed = distinct given+surname tokens from all_official_names_freq.parquet for cc in ES/CO/PE/MX/VE/CL/EC/UY/PY/BO (~260K given + ~167K surname), the same Spanish-speaking-Americas reference pool pattern used elsewhere in this project. If INEC republishes the visualizer, the resourceKey/datasetId/reportId/modelId above will need re-scraping from the redirect page. Fetcher: scripts/fetch_ec_inec_lookup.py (resumable; raw JSON cached under raw/EC/cache_given/ and raw/EC/cache_surname/). ENRICHED 2026-07-14: added a per-year breakdown by re-querying the same tokens with the DAX filter's year dimension included (Dim_Anio/"Anio"), one extra query per (name, tipo) -- same courtesy rate-limit as the base fetch. 85,579 given + 39,987 surname tokens now have full 1900-2024 year series alongside their national cumulative total. Fetcher: scripts/fetch_ec_year.py (resumable; raw JSON cached under raw/EC/cache_given_year/ and raw/EC/cache_surname_year/; merges year rows into this same parquet rather than a separate source_id). VERIFIED 2026-07-14: normalized parquet 1,767,197 rows, 119,474 distinct names, name_type split surname=797,436/given=969,761, year range 1900-2024 (matches series_start/end). Dup-group check on (name, name_type, sex, year) found 0 duplicates. No null/negative counts. Spot check: JOSE as given totals 1,181,412 across 126 years vs 2,744 as a surname across 107 years (name-type skew is directionally correct); MARIA as given totals 2,084,278/126yr vs only 34/16yr as surname; GONZALEZ as surname totals 261,618/126yr vs 12/7yr as given -- all three show the expected lopsided given-vs-surname split for common Ecuadorian names.

About this data
Official figures are reproduced from the register named beside them, at the year named beside them, and are never combined across registers. The "across all records" ranking counts records in our own corpus — historical registers, the diaspora, business and place records — and is not a population count. Bearer estimates are omitted where a name accounts for more than a quarter of a country's records, because the estimate is not defensible there. Names listed by reference works and licensed name dictionaries are cited as attesting a name; their figures are not published.
