How names work in Argentina
Names in Argentina follow one naming tradition. Its structure, its given-name and surname stock, how to address someone and what trips software up are set out on its own page.

Where the two lists disagree
25 of RENAPER — births 1922–2015 (Kaggle mirror)'s top 25 given names sit five or more places away in our record corpus. Neither ranking is wrong; they count different people.
The register counts one population in one year — everyone it enumerates, once. Our corpus counts records: historical registers going back decades, the diaspora, business and place records, and several generations of births. A name that was common two generations ago outranks a name common today; a name whose spelling scatters across sources (diacritics dropped, transliterated differently) loses ground, because only its dominant spelling is ranked.
Characteristic of Argentina
Not the most common names — the most distinctive ones. A name appears here when Argentina holds a larger share of its bearers than the world does, weighted by how much of the country's whole name distribution it accounts for.
Over time
Up to five names at a time.
Scripts & spelling
Countries whose names look alike
Measured as the overlap between each country's top 300 given-name forms, weighted by how common each is — the fuzzy-set approach of Lauc (2024), on a truncated inventory.

What we know about this register
Distinct from the existing bulk-CSV ar-renaper-* sources (ar-renaper-nombres-nacimientos/-apellidos, ar-renaper-kaggle) -- this is a live, per-name, government-hosted register returning the FULL per-year (1922-2015) birth-registration time series per (name, sex), not a top-N snapshot. No JSON API: plain HTML GET, no cookies/auth/WAF, works with bare requests/curl. Exact counts confirmed down to quantity=1, no suppression floor. Flow semantics (birth registrations, like US SSA) so one row is emitted per (name, sex, year) rather than a single aggregate, matching the us-ssa-baby-names convention. No given-name enumeration endpoint exists (only a narrow top-10-per-year-per-sex list), so seed = distinct given names from ar-renaper-kaggle-births.parquet with lifetime count >=10 (~237K tokens) -- ar-renaper-kaggle already covers the bulk of AR given names, so this source's marginal value is an independent official cross-check + full year-by-year granularity rather than new name coverage. Sibling RENAPER surname/given-name Shiny apps (estadisticas.renaper.gob.ar/app_NombresApellidos, app_apellidos_dptos) were investigated but are currently broken server-side (WebSocket/SockJS session layer returns 400/"Another connection still open" even from a genuine browser) -- no surname coverage from this source. Fetcher: scripts/fetch_ar_datos_nombres.py (resumable; raw JSON cached under raw/AR/cache/). VERIFIED 2026-07-14: full seed complete (237,065/237,065 names cached, 0 errors, 0 remaining). Normalized parquet: 6,096,274 rows, 233,956 distinct names, year range 1922-2015 (matches series_start/end), no null/negative counts. Dup-group check on (name, sex, year) found only 4 duplicate-key rows out of 6.10M. Spot check: JOSE/M=43,275 total across 94 years, JUAN/M=44,756/94yr, MARIA/F=51,060/94yr -- plausible top-name magnitudes for a 1922-2015 Argentine birth register.

About this data
Official figures are reproduced from the register named beside them, at the year named beside them, and are never combined across registers. The "across all records" ranking counts records in our own corpus — historical registers, the diaspora, business and place records — and is not a population count. Bearer estimates are omitted where a name accounts for more than a quarter of a country's records, because the estimate is not defensible there. Names listed by reference works and licensed name dictionaries are cited as attesting a name; their figures are not published.
