ELSTAT — population given names, 2021 on the left; every record we hold for Greece on the right. A dashed line means the name is not in our top ranks for this country at all.

The register counts one population in one year — everyone it enumerates, once. Our corpus counts records: historical registers going back decades, the diaspora, business and place records, and several generations of births. A name that was common two generations ago outranks a name common today; a name whose spelling scatters across sources (diacritics dropped, transliterated differently) loses ground, because only its dominant spelling is ranked.

Characteristic of Greece

Not the most common names — the most distinctive ones. A name appears here when Greece holds a larger share of its bearers than the world does, weighted by how much of the country's whole name distribution it accounts for.

Scripts & spelling

Names in Greece are written in Latin (75%) and Greek (25%), measured over the spellings our corpus records for this country.

The best-attested names in Greece, in the spelling our records use there. Where a Latin spelling is also attested it is shown beneath — a spelling from the corpus, not a machine romanisation.

Countries whose names look alike

Measured as the overlap between each country's top 300 given-name forms, weighted by how common each is — the fuzzy-set approach of Lauc (2024), on a truncated inventory.

What we know about this register

FIRST GR SURNAME SOURCE IN THE PROJECT. Before this, the whole official layer held ~1,000 Greek-script name forms and ZERO Greek surnames; Greece ranked 13th-thinnest of the 140 ccs with any tier<=3 data, because ELSTAT publishes no name-frequency tabulation (publication-limited, not seed-limited). Διαύγεια's open API exposes firstName and lastName as SEPARATE fields, so no full-name parsing is needed. Harvested 2026-08-03: all 5,414 active organizations enumerated (0 fetch failures; 635 have no registered signers), yielding 47,857 distinct officials deduped on the person uid (the same official signs for several organizations). Result: 2,926 given forms / 48,755 bearers and 23,332 surname forms / 48,236 bearers. Plausibility: top given ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ, ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ, ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ, ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ, ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΣ, ΜΑΡΙΑ; top surname ΠΑΠΑΔΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ then its feminine ΠΑΠΑΔΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ — Papadopoulos is indeed the commonest Greek surname. Long tail is 15,663 surnames at a single bearer. Fetcher: scripts/fetch_gr_diavgeia_signers.py (resumable; raw JSON cached per org under raw/GR/diavgeia/signers/). *** UNIVERSE CAVEAT — DO NOT READ AS NATIONAL FREQUENCY. *** evidence=count is literal (true counts of distinct officials per name) but the universe is public servants with signing rights: adult, employed, skewed to senior grades. Use as an existence-and-form floor for Greek names and a RELATIVE frequency signal only. Every row's data_note repeats this so the caveat survives being joined away from this registry row. SEX is deliberately NULL: Greek given names are strongly gendered and Greek surnames carry morphological gender (ΠΑΠΑΔΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ male vs ΠΑΠΑΔΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ female genitive), but the API asserts no sex and inferring it would record our guess as the government's fact. CLEANING, all measured: (1) HOMOGLYPH REPAIR — Greek civil-service data entry mixes glyph-identical Latin capitals into Greek names, so ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ also arrived as KΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ (Latin K) and ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤIΝΟΣ (Latin I) — same name, different codepoints, silently splitting one name's count across entries that look identical on screen. Any token containing both scripts is folded Latin->Greek (no real personal name mixes scripts); wholly-Latin tokens are left alone because OIKONOMOY-vs-KENNETH is genuinely ambiguous (both consist only of mappable letters). Residual mixed forms: 2 of 26,258 (0.008%). (2) NAME PARTS — given names split on whitespace and hyphens (Greek law allows two given names; 792 of 814 multi-token firstName values have a lastName alongside, so they are double given names, not misfiled full names — only 22 rows, 0.05%, look like the latter); surnames split on hyphens ONLY, never whitespace, because ΤΟΠΑΛ ΜΕΜΕΤ and ΣΑΡ ΧΟΥΣΕΪΝ are single compound surnames of Greek citizens of the Turkish minority in Thrace and shredding them would fabricate surnames nobody bears. (3) INSTITUTIONS DROPPED — Διαύγεια allows a collective body as signer, so the name fields also held ΝΟΜΙΚΟΥ ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΚΡΑΤΟΥΣ and ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ΣΥΝΤΗΡΗΣΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΕΠΙΣΚΕΥΗΣ ΟΧΗΜΑΤΩΝ; unfiltered these inject ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟ ('council'), ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ('committee') and ΟΧΗΜΑΤΩΝ ('of vehicles') as Greek names — the common-noun contamination that made mondodb 94.5% noise. The firstName field was the worse offender (ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ 68x, ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟ 33x). 2 residual leaks. Note ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΟΥ/ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΑΚΗΣ/ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ are KEPT — real occupational surnames from επίτροπος 'commissioner'. (4) dropped system accounts (digits, e.g. '14555_ADMIN'), emails pasted into name fields, parenthetical nicknames, honorifics (ΔΡ) and bare initials. PERSON ROWS go to /backup/leaks/persons/gr/gr_diavgeia_signers.parquet (47,857 rows, verbatim as published — fidelity to the official record); only the aggregates here are cleaned.

About this data

Official figures are reproduced from the register named beside them, at the year named beside them, and are never combined across registers. The "across all records" ranking counts records in our own corpus — historical registers, the diaspora, business and place records — and is not a population count. Bearer estimates are omitted where a name accounts for more than a quarter of a country's records, because the estimate is not defensible there. Names listed by reference works and licensed name dictionaries are cited as attesting a name; their figures are not published.

Questions

What is the most common given name in Greece?
Μαρία, according to ELSTAT — population given names (2021), with 426,312 bearers recorded among girls.
Why do sources disagree about the commonest name in Greece?
Because they count different people. ELSTAT — population given names (2021) counts one population once, and its commonest given name is Μαρία. Our corpus counts every record we hold — historical registers, the diaspora, decades of births — and its commonest is Maria. Both are on this page, each with its denominator.
