from a personal name based on Arabic mansur ‘victorious’, ‘triumphant’. This word is found in compound names such as Mansur-ud-Din ‘victorious in religion’. The second of the Abbasid khalifs was Al-Mansur Abu-Ja'far (c. 712-75), who built the city of Baghdad in 762 and is considered the real founder of the Abbasid khalifate.
